Abstract

Head trauma (TBI) is a worldwide public health problem. About 1.5 million people die annually victims of TBI, being one of the main causes of mortality in young people. The aim of this study was to identify characteristics of patients admitted for TBI at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Vale do São Francisco (HU-UNIVASF). Study carried out at HU-UNIVASF, Petrolina-PE, in 2018. The data were analyzed in R-project 3.4.2. Categorical variables were expressed through their absolute and relative frequencies. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Chi-square, Kruskal Wallis tests, Mann-Whitney U test, Kaplan-Meier, Wilcoxon test for paired samples and the McNemar test were used to analyze the variables, always considering the p-value to be significant. <0.05. Results: prevalence of male hospitalizations (82.3%), between 18-27 years; 3.6% of individuals were hospitalized more than once; 50.1% are from the region and 54.9% were regulated by another service for HU-UNIVASF; 38.9% were classified as having mild TBI on admission and most were discharged (84.2%); the months with the highest number of hospitalizations were August (12%), June (11.8%) and December (10.7%); motorcycle accident was the most common cause of hospitalizations (45.3%), followed by falls (28.1%); It is clear that there is a need for further studies on the theme, in addition to a government incentive for health promotion and awareness campaigns on the subject, as well as a more rigorous traffic inspection in order to reduce the number of cases, which are many, and bring so many complications. for the daily life of the patient and the family.
