IMPACT OF DEPRESSION IN THE LABOR LIFE OF PATIENT WITH DEPRESSIVE DISORDER

Abstract

Introduction: Depression is characterized by a very common mood disorder in which the individual loses interest and pleasure in everyday activities. It is regarded as the evil of the century, being one of the causes of incapacitation of the individual in several aspects, including in his labor activitys. For lack of courage, many end up leaving work and this has consequences both personally and professionally. Objective: To know how depression affects the working life of the patient with depressive disorder. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional, qualitative study based on oral narratives performed with patients who are diagnosed with depression and are being treated in an clinic ambulatory of a reference public hospital in Salvador-Ba. As a data collection instrument, a socio-demographic questionnaire was used to trace the patients' profile and two other open questions elaborated by the researcher to be answered by them. Data were analyzed based on content analysis. Results: From this study it was possible to observe through the discourses obtained by the patients in the open questions that the symptoms of the depressive disorder had a direct impact on the working life of all patients interviewed. Parallel to this, it could be shown that they used coping strategies to deal with the disease in their professional environment.
