Abstract

Introduction: Medical residency is the most recommended program for specialist training, considered a gold standard postgraduate modality, in which, in this period, there are increases in technical-scientific skills, self-confidence and professional safety. It is a stressful time for the doctor because it requires significant changes in style and pace of life. In addition to the stress inherent to the student-medical transition period, other factors such as professional responsibility, social isolation and the fear of making mistakes are linked to the various psychological, psychopathological and behavioral manifestations, such as the onset of Burnout syndrome. Objective: To investigate risk factors for the development of Burnout syndrome in physicians residing at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Maranhão. Methods: This is a descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional study. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and a sociodemographic questionnaire were used to analyze predisposing factors for the development of Burnout syndrome. Results: The study had a sample of 80 physicians, which revealed an incidence of moderate risk factors in 76.25% of the interviewees. 15%  had a high risk factor for the syndrome, most of whom were in their first years of residence and less than 30 years of age. Conclusion: being a first-year resident and being under 30 years old are risk factors for developing Burnout syndrome.
