Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate the epidemiological profile of meningitis in the Federal District between 2007 and 2017. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out, with a quantitative approach and information linked to the National System of Notifiable Diseases Database (SINAN). Results: A total of 1,555 registered cases were analyzed in the period, with 57.8% men and 42.2% women. Children under 1 year are the most affected with 25% of the total. In the etiology category, the most observed was unspecified (34.3%), followed by meningitis by other bacteria (19.1%) and viral (10.8%), respectively. Regarding the outcome of the cases, 1,138 were discharged and 234 died of the disease. Conclusion: It was found, in agreement with the literature, that men are more affected, as well as, the population most affected are the children under 1 year. The high incidence of cases with an unspecified etiologic agent shows that laboratory and diagnose methods should be improved.
